This unique course, delivered by a highly experienced professional equity analyst, will help investors become expert at valuing companies. This is the first module in our series, Become a Valuation Guru. It first reviews the Behind the Balance Sheet Valuation philosophy, which has been honed in a 25+ year career looking at stocks.
The course then explores how to calculate enterprise value, the most critical building block in company valuation. We look at how to calculate a simple EV, as is done in Bloomberg and similar systems. We then go through how to adjust the EV for minorities and associates, looking at practical problems encountered, such as loss-making minorities, multiple associates, only some of which are quoted and other real life complications.
We then review some of the more subtle and sophisticated adjustments, such as valuing debt, timing the EV, rolling the EV forward and other complications. For many companies, these are not significant, but sometimes they are the explanation why something LOOKS cheap but isn't really, and these are essential tools in the analyst's armoury.
In our experience, most sell-side analyst are unable to calculate an EV correctly, and the multiples generated by standardised valuation tools are usually inaccurate.
If you don't know how to adjust enterprise value calculations, your analysis will be considerably weaker - this is an essential course for any serious investor, equity analyst or private equity manager.
